5 am is simply time. Some people choose to get up early so they can seize the day. Get 8 hours of sleep and tackle the day head on. Set up your daily routine and set yourself up for your best day. Then I laugh when I actually think about it more. What’s the difference between someone who gets up at 5 am in the UK. or Japan than someone where you live now?
For me, I have been working nights and find that this idealism flys in my face and it doesn’t leave a good taste in my mouth.
I think it’s an awesome idea to set yourself up for the day with a routine that positions you to have the most success. The time someone Wakes up does not coincide with someone’s ability to achieve more or less success.
I get the same 8 hours of sleep and wake up and do closely the same routines as the many touted to be waking up at 5 am. This routine consists of wake up. Put feet on the floor. Drink a glass of water. Open window blind staring at the sun and start my body into wake up mode. I then head over and brush my teeth, head downstairs. Have my coffee and either talk with my wife or son and veg at the table. After I’ve finished my coffee I head down to my row machine and exercise for 15 min then I head to the shower. While In The shower I meditate and think over my affirmations. I’m am then set up for my day and ready to go. I don’t work till 10 pm but I take that time for my family and serve them. Although I haven’t been consistent at this. It is my ideal morning routine.
There is a great article and book on sleep chronotypes. After reading into this I’ve discovered I’m a wolf. The book explains the best way someone can optimize their day based on their sleep type. The book is called the Power of When and you can find the quiz here and find out what chronotype you are. I think the book has some effective points to help you achieve your best routine for highest productivity.
The advantage of waking up at 5 am is that it is a quiet time of the day. This is a space where many people find that they can think and accomplish their morning routine to get ready for their best day. If you have kids, your up before they are and can think clearly without distractions. I think the main goal of getting up so early is to pull yourself away from distractions. I think this is the very reason why I like working nights as I get a lot of time to myself to get things done. I like to optimize myself so that I get to tap into my creative self at around 3 am – 5 am
Let me know in the comments below what chronotype you quizzed as and tell me your opinion to getting up early and seizing the day and if it makes any sense to you as to why people suggest people who wake up early are more successful.
