Do you remember the time when Columbine shootings were happening? They were wondering what caused the shootings. Who would raise such a child to murder so many people? And what kind of hate would this child have to endure to do such things?
Some would blame it on video games being too violent and others would blame it on violent tv and there was a lot of slinging back and forth of the blame for how someone would bring themselves to do something like that.
To me, this sets the stage for how things can influence you. The Influence in our lives has been described to me by a man Jaron Lanier who spoke at the TED on youtube. Where you’re on a raft and floating enjoying the sun and the waves and the sound of the beach. But as you lay there and relax before you know it you’re out in the middle of the ocean not knowing where you are.
The same is true when we subject ourselves to any influence whether it’s our phones, tv, or other peoples perspectives. We begin to slowly drift out into the abyss.
The thought I had to relate to it was Chinese torture with water. At first, the drips on your forehead are a joke and are easily dismissed. Blue slowly and surely like the frog put in cold water to boil the pain begins to affect you.
I believe that whatever you feed your mind will create action. If you think a thought you’re now in the position to choose what to do with that thought. For me, when I’m dieting I choose when and what I get to eat. Later in the day my will power is very diminished and I give in far easier than if I was just waking up. At that time of day, I’m far more likely to choose the wrong option for my goals.
The same is true when we view negative and bad things on television and in social media. When we feed our souls depleting energies we put yourselves in a vulnerable position to act on those fleeting thoughts that come in and out of our minds when we dwell on those thoughts.
The same is true for positive thoughts. If we dwell on positive thoughts and reinforce our minds to look for the best in any situation we will find that our outlook will change and our ability to choose the right action will be far easier. It is true. The light separates the darkness.
This is not to say that we should blame video games or television on the outcome of a horrific tragedy. It is saying that you have the power to choose. If you can put yourself in a place where it is easier to choose the right thing then I would definitely take that path. What Jaron above is suggesting is that we may be on the edge of influence where we really are not choosing for yourselves but are being manipulated by mass media.
One powerful way to start turning your thoughts from negative to positive is gratitude. If you take 10 minutes each day and focus and think about the things your thankful you’ll begin to change your view on things. Just like if someone is depressed and they tell themselves to smile even when they don’t feel like it. Eventually, they’ll be smiling without forcing themselves and actually begin to feel happy. I believe there is a study on this as well, so if you find the source maybe you could link it in the comments below.
Personally whenever someone asks me how I am. I tell them that I’m happy. Sometimes I don’t feel happy but normally when I say it out loud. I repeat to my inner man and say, Yea, I’m the happy guy, and I am happy. Then my mind cycles into all the things I’m thankful for and why I am the happy guy that I am.
